This is such a brilliant picture. I have to admit it was a little hard for me to name some of the scientists - but I actually did ok --> gotta start guessing before I give up the list ... I'm sure it will resonate much more when you hear some of the names if you don't know the face - except the obvious.

Far right...Snooki
I recognize the faces of five others....need to reflect a bit more before I make an actual guess.

Permalink Reply by LEX on February 7, 2012 at 11:52am Snooki - while obviously recognizable is also given the same amount of space in this as 7 of the people who "we don't know, but should" - I love the message behind this, but I wonder whether this would have as much impact if Snooki was stuck in the middle of the collage.
Permalink Reply by Kelly Wade on February 7, 2012 at 12:51pm The point was to keep it separated to show what's wrong with the projection of this generation. As you pointed out, if she was in the middle it probably wouldn't have the same impact because it wouldn't be showcasing the "smart vs dumb" persona -- I thought this was a perfect representation of our subjugated media. I wanted to test the waters of this site a little in determining who knew who - but to be honest, I only knew a few faces ... once I read the names I could identify the faces easier ... The damn media got to me too.
Permalink Reply by LEX on February 7, 2012 at 2:35pm I think that your point about the subjugated media is certainly a good one. It was s0mething that I was thinking about commenting on in my first post, but my class was ending so I was cut short.
I am reminded of the post I've been seeing on facebook that show for example the "attractive" woman now v. the "attractive" woman of the past and the "what happened?!" sentiment. While I certainly see the smart v. dumb dichotomy at work here, I am also struck by a then v. now theme. Of course I know that some of the "smart" people are contemporaries, I wonder what this would look like if the real academics and scholars of NOW were featured next to Snooki. Would they be more or less recognizable? And what would that say about the media - or society in general?
Permalink Reply by Kelly Wade on February 11, 2012 at 8:41am That's a great idea! We should create one that shows the smart and powerful young people on one side vs. The Jersey Shore & Beiber or something on the other.
Who would you put on the smart side? You're right that we might not even recognize them unless it's Zuckerberg, Sean Parker, Taylor Swift, and Teebow...
