Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel spoke today at the UN General Assembly about Iran's development of nuclear power. With drawing pad and felt pen, he physically drew a red line on a bomb indicating the point at which Iran would achieve 90% weapons grade uranium- a mere 10% away from producing full nuclear weapons. He said that the Iranians are in stage two of a three stage process and estimated they could have a nuclear bomb as early as summer of 2013 if not preempted. Netanyahu called on the UN to stand behind Israel and place much tougher sanctions on Iran. While President Obama told the U.N. General Assembly that the US will "do what we must" to prevent Iran from having nukes, he set no clear time table for military action. Netanyahu did not reveal his military strategy if Israel was forced to go it alone, but he did declare that Israel would NOT attack Iran prior to the Presidential election.

Hmmm... What do you think the strategy was behind that message?

A chess game it is. On the world stage. I don't believe Obama will stand behind Israel if he is reelected. He has shown great dislike toward Netanyahu. Remember his off-mic remarks to French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy about how he had to deal with Netanyahu on a regular basis and that he [Netanyahu] was a pain in his [Obama] ass. And with Obama's reluctance to admit that the hit on our US Embassy in Libya was a terrorist attack by Al Qaeda and his insistence that the protests against America are all about some stupid video that nobody has even seen indicates he is very much pro-Islam vs. pro-Israel.

If Romney wins the election, Israel is assured protection by the US. If Obama wins reelection, then I'm afraid Israel will have to go it alone. Then there is always the possibility that sanctions against Iran will work prior to that, but I wouldn't count on it. Certainly not with Hilary Clinton in the driver's seat. Remember, women don't have rights in Iran, so I doubt Hilary poses any threat to Ahmadinejad.

I like Benjamin Netanyahu. There is something in his presence that makes me trust him. I also feel we have a moral responsibility to protect Israel since the US did arrange their settlement. Never thought I'd see this day.

Netanyahu basically told Romney that he would wait for his inauguration as well by setting a 6 month window for his red line. Had Israel attacked Iran prior to the election, the US would most likely have backed them especially if President Obama wanted the Jewish vote. And technically that would have assured him winning reelection since no US President has been voted out of office during a declared war. Do you think Bibi used this tidbit in his strategy? And do you think President Obama will back Israel if he is reelected and the red line is reached. This is the biggest political chess game I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.
