Dance studio in Canada now offering pole dancing class for kids

The dance studio "The Twisted Grip Dance and Fitness Studio" in British Columbia is now offering the "Little Spinners class". According to the owner of the studio Kristy Craig, some of her adult members wanted the class to be offered for their kids. The class started on the 6th of September and already has four kids enrolled (three girls and a boy) and their youngest student is five years old. Craig is trying to defend the class, claiming "Kids love climbing trees, they will climb anything".

It's no surprise that some people are against the class, saying it sexualizes the children and could even lead the kids to becoming strippers in the future.

I personally am disturbed about the story but not just about kids training in pole dancing. Firstly with the owner of the studio, who describes it as acrobatics on a pole and that kids like to climb things. That makes me wonder why they don't just call the class "Acrobatic styling" or something that doesn't have the stigma as pole dancing refers to stripping or the seductive dancing. Secondly, the argument of kids wanting to climb trees is more about fitness/exercise, not dance. So how far apart can they make their pole dancing from what happens in strip clubs?

The most disturbing part of the story (if true) is about the parents who are asking for the class. This seems like it has evolved from all the child beauty pageant that are publicized on reality shows. If you have seen one episode, you can see that the parent tries to live through their child and they take no consideration of their child's feelings or choices.

I can't help but feel this is a bad sign for society. That all the sex tapes, publicity whoring and reality shows have been slowly deteriorating a lot of weak minded people into thinking this is the way to success.I personally think this is a step into the wrong direction.

I can totally see why you would not approve of this. From our "older" perspective, we know that stripper poles have a negative connotation, but more and more women are starting to take pole-dancing classes because of the intense workout it provides. Now I clearly understand that women are not children, and it appears to be very disturbing when you see pole-dancing being offered to 5 and 6 year olds, however, they are calling "Little Spinner" not "Little Stripper" and it could be associated with circus performance. If they are having little girls wear 6 inch heels and doing spread eagles, then NO this is not cool. But the kids have no idea what a stripper is nor what a stripper pole looks like and if it provides good exercise in an innocent way, then I don't see a problem with it.

WTF are they thinking? Like they couldn't have called it Chinese acrobat classes or something really cool like Cirque du Soleil for Kids (I believe that group started in Quebec)? Whomever suggested pole dancing classes for kids is an idiot, but then again, there seems to be so many of those running around these days. Thanks for the post, Fahd.
