"You have to Fit In before you can Stand Out."This is a lesson that one of my really smart grad school professors taught me. I certainly think it's true. Here's why:
Anytime we take on a new role, whether it's a new job, new volunteer position, a new anything, there are a couple of things we need to remember:
As you move into anything new, look for ways to FISO. Small wins early mean much more than a big "win" that costs you long term.
You're smart. You've got great ideas. You've got what it takes...if you're patient. As a Gen Y, that's not the way we're wired. Ironically enough, that is the way we're led.
You want to contribute. You want to make a difference. You want to be valued and appreciated. So does the new team you're on.
What do you think? Does FISO sound credible to you?

But nobody can argue with solid work ethics and intelligent contributions. It's all about timing and having the support of your team. FISO...but do it with diplomacy.
Comment by Madison Hart on October 28, 2012 at 11:53am Aka: pecking order...my father always used that term and I hated it. lol...why must I be at the end of the line all the time just because of my "pecking order"? He would tell me to be patient, as the order is sure to change as I grew. 20 years later the pecking order still remains, just in a different environment (the work place). What I didn't mention about my dad is that even though I was at the bottom of the "pecking order", I could always smother him with hugs, kisses, and "pleases" that I pretty much got what I wanted from another direction.
So to address the FISO...you have to "fit in" before you can "stand out". Great advice, Stephen, and one for Gen Y to live by. We are strong, smart and full of ideas...now it's time to get the rest of them to take notice.
Lead by example.
