Gina Rinehart is the richest woman in Australia (some argue the world) with a wealth of $18 Billion. Her wealth (most of it) was inherited when her father died in 1992. Her father, Lang Hancock was a mining mogul who famously discovered the largest iron ore deposit. Since she has taken over the company she has managed make 300x times more over her 20 year charge of the company. However the reason for that increase was due to the iron ore mining boom in the early 2000s, not her business savvy. Her hypocrisy came in a column she recently wrote where she wrote:
"If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain,” She wrote. “Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.”
Hello kettle? It's the pot calling!
There is no denying she has helped create her vast wealth but if it wasn't for her dad, she might have been working at Burger King. So it is not fair for her to accuse most people of laziness when she had a very generous hand out Also while what she said might have some truth to it, she has no right to talk down to people like this. If a quote like this came from Bill Gates or Steve Jobs it may be seen as motivational but since it came from an heiress, it seems a little ridiculous. It comes as no surprise that she has received a lot of backlash from the Australian public.

Comment by Christine Wu on September 13, 2012 at 4:20pm There is nothing wrong with being rich. Nor is there anything wrong with receiving an inheritance, but when that happens it is best to be humble about it. Love the pot/kettle analogy, Fahd. I never heard of Gina, but I'm sure she would walk back that statement if she could seeing that it is getting negative international attention.
Not sure if it's true, but Mitt Romney supposedly inherited a bunch of money from his dad, but gave it all to charity. Claims he built his wealth by himself. And if that's true, then Gina should take a lesson from him.
