This chapter states that man moves through three basic states of consciousness. In truth there are four basic states. But, because two of these states are identical in nature (but different in their time-space relationship), three basic states are considered. Thus, you fluctuate in your nature through these phases of life: first as an Earthling, then as mind, finally as divine; then as an Earthling again as the cycle begins over again.
“When consciousness moves in the physical world it knows itself, because consciousness has turned back upon itself. This turned-back-upon-itself consciousness is compound awareness. When consciousness is not turned back upon itself, it is called simple awareness; it is not aware of itself.
Consciousness in this world is compound awareness, in the sleep state, it is simple awareness; in the unconditioned state it is balanced awareness. When consciousness is simple it is generally ingoing, producing an introverted personality. When consciousness is compound, it is generally outgoing, producing an extroverted personality. When consciousness is balanced, it produces a divine being, which transcends Earthly life."- Goswami Kriyananda; Pathway To God Consciousness page:52.

"But for him who has gone beyond desire, whose desire is set on the Eternal, neither pain to be avoided nor pleasure to be gained inspires his work. He fears no hell and desires no heaven. His one desire is, to know the will of the Father and finish His work, he comes directly in line with the divine Will, and works cleanly and immediately, without longing or fear. His heart dwells in the Eternal; and all his desires are set on the Eternal." Yoga Sutras of Patanjali page: 100.
